Will Canon Upgrade the Powershot D10 this Year?

d10 upgrade

The replacement for the 2009 D10 is long overdue.

Last year, we rejoiced when we heard from CanonRumors website that there was “a sign” that a new D10 replacement was on its way.

The site stated that Canon Canada seemed to be replacing broken D10s with whole new cameras, instead of fixing them.

But it’s already over a year since the rumor was circulated and there was no sign that an upgrade to the 2009 camera will be here before Christmas.

We contacted various Canon spokesmen and tech supports for comment. Nick, a Tech Support guy said :-

“Now, I should mention that like the rest of the technicians here, I don’t learn about new cameras until we announce them to the general public, so I really don’t know what’s coming.

In the past we’ve announced new camera in the spring and in the fall and many of our cameras have been updated within 2-3 years of their initial release.  Some cameras aren’t updated as quickly though.”

Okay, here’s the thing. The D10 is old and outdated, but the demand is high (it is still in Amazon’s top 100 best-selling camera for last month). And at $299, the price is still at par with high end waterproof cameras like this year’s Pentax WG-1. So, there’s no reason for Canon to replace this model this year.

But come 2012, it will be a different story. HD video will be a standard, so does GPS tagging and double door protection for the battery and memory card slots. Canon D10 doesn’t have all these. In fact, the VGA video is laughable by today’s standard.

So, here’s our prediction. There will be an upgrade to the D10 (probably called D11 or D20) somewhere in February or March 2012.

As for the awkward shape, we think it’ll stay.

What’s your prediction?
