Olympus µ 720 SW survives almost a year lost at sea
Hamburg, September 2009 – When Kaido Haagen went diving near a shipwreck off the coast of Estonia, he was surprised to discover a long lost Olympus µ 720 SW resting on the bottom of the ocean.
The shock and waterproof digital camera had been there ever since it went missing nearly a year earlier while its owner was diving around the same wreck. After some clever detective work, the lost camera was reunited with Toomas Eelrand, its happy owner.
But Mr Eelrand had another very pleasant surprise in store: despite a new crust of barnacles decorating its surface, the images that he shot on his dive the previous summer were recovered from the camera’s xD-card!
Stranger than fiction
While diving around the wreck of the Rasma near the island of Mohni on
28 June 2009, Kaido Haagen had no idea what was in store for him. An active photographer himself, his eye was drawn to a submerged µ 720 SW on the sea floor.
After posting a note on local diving club forums and with the help of images from the camera’s xD-Picture card, Toomas Eelrand, the camera’s owner, was located to receive the good news.
Underwater adventure
It turned out that Mr Eelrand had borrowed the camera from his daughter on 10 August 2008 before setting off to explore the popular diving spot. But later that day the camera’s connection cord broke and he did not notice when he lost the camera. Unfortunately he ran out of air and could not search for it very long either.
Waterproof to depths of 3m and resistant to falls from up to 1.5m, the sturdy µ 720 SW had braved the elements, barnacles, tides, ocean temperatures and weather for all that time.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going
“After I dried off I was lucky enough to get all the images off the memory card. All of the µ 720 SW’s buttons and covers seemed to work. It looked like the only thing it needed was a new battery and some cosmetic treatment”, said Kaido Haagen, the finder of the lost camera.
“We think this kind of rugged performance speaks for itself and are pleased to see yet another example of one of our µ TOUGH cameras coming out on top against whatever the weather or its adventurous users can throw at it.
These cameras are built to take the knocks and go the distance”, said Franziska Jorke, Communications Manager, Corporate Communications, Olympus Imaging Europa GmbH.
