The Fuji’s Z33WP camera is one of the most affordable waterproof digital camera in the market.
So, if you’re looking for an entry level waterproof camera for your toddler or for those who has never owned a digital camera before, this is one of your candidate.
| We Review | We Found | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Picture Quality | Forget about taking indoor pictures or when the light is low as your pictures will be very, very grainy. We find that the 10 Mp resolution is merely academic -- as the picture quality only matches one taken from from your camera phones. But if you reserve it just for sunny outdoors, you'll find it more likeable. But still, the contrast is low and the photos are quite washed out. Note: Because it's easy to lay your finger on the lens cover, your images will be very poor if you never bother checking or cleaning your fingerprints or smudges on it before shooting. | C+ |
| Video Quality | At 30 fps, the VGA video quality is average. You can't use the optical zoom while recording and since the clips are formatted in AVI format, it takes quite a space. For example, a blank 2GB card can hold around 35 minutes of recording at the highest resolution. If you want to record videos mainly for posting your clips online, videos produced from this camera should do the job. Not great -- but acceptable. | C+ |
| Ease of Use | The Z33WP fits comfortably in your palm with cell-phone like touch buttons nicely laid out at the back. The menu is as simple as Canon's and the font are large and easy to read. Perfect for kids, older folks or those new to digital cameras. But the LCD is quite dim and could be difficult to read in daylight or during sunny day on the beach. | B+ |
| Battery Life | Since it's small, the battery of this Fuji you shoot around 200 shots before it needs a re-charge. This is far better than the Olympus 550WP that carries a similar price tag. | B+ |
| Built Quality | This camera is covered mostly by plastics except for the metal-like material for the on/off and shutter button. With rounded edges and thin textured body, the camera is nice to look at and easy to hold when wet. Unfortunately, we've read reports sayings that the shiny paint on the camera's body could wear off within months. | B |
| Speed | In bright light, Z33's speed is acceptable. Focusing takes around 1 second while storing a photo to your memory card takes 2 to 3 seconds. This is faster than the Olympus's basic waterproof camera but slower than most of rugged cameras in the market. | B |
| Toughness | Because it's encased in plastic and not designed to be tough, you need to take care of the Z33Wp just like any normal point and shoot cameras. Take care not to damage the battery compartment as it's the weakest spot of any waterproof camera. Once you damage or crack the door, it's the end of it's waterproof life. | B |
| Number of Functions | The camera has only 6 Scene modes and simple retouching (such as cropping and red eye removal). | C |
