Fuji XP30 vs XP10

fuji xp30

At only $239.99, this year’s Fuji XP30 is poised to position itself as an attractive alternative to the more expensive Panasonic and Pentax. We didn’t expect much from XP10 last year but we were surprised with the sales figure.

If you are still deciding which one to buy, here’s your quick guide to the difference between the new Fuji XP30 vs. the XP10.

What’s Better?

  1. Waterproof Depth
Fuji Xp30 can now handle more water pressure. It is now rated to be waterproof to 5m instead of just 3m.
  2. Shockproof Height
The old camera could handle a fall of around 1m. There’s a slight increase this year with XP30 being able to withstand a 1.5m fall.
  3. The Lens
Fuji XP30 now comes with a 28-140 mm equivalent wide angle lens. The good thing about it is you could squeeze more people in your group pictures or get better scene from your panorama shots. But the bad thing is close up portrait shots will probably look funny.
  4. Shooting Modes
Unused and irrelevant modes that only clutter the camera like the museum, auction and successive movie modes have been deleted. Motion panorama has been added.
  5. Image Stabilizer
This is a significant improvement in the Fuji XP30. While the XP10 uses digital stabilizer to reduce the blur when you can’t keep it steady, the XP30 uses a mechanical stabilizer to do the same thing. This type of stabilizer is known to produce sharper, less noisy pictures than a digital one.
  6. Number of Pictures per charge
If CIPA is correct, the XP30 could get you around 200 shots for each full battery charge. The older model was only rated to give you around 165.

What’s Worse?

  1. Picture Quality (probably)
The resolution of this camera has been increased from 12.2 MP to 14.2Mp while the sensor size remains the same. In theory, such changes will only give you soft photos. Panasonic did this same mistake last year.
  2. Internal Memory
    Reduced from 13Mb to 10Mb.

What’s New?

  1. GPS for XP30
We think GPS is a very useful addition to a rugged camera. Firstly because it helps you remember where you took your shots. Secondly, because it helps make searching a specific picture faster — because you could now find your pictures according to the location name. But if you think that you don’t need this time saving feature, buy the XP20. It has the same specification as the XP30, minus the GPS.

  2. HD Movie Compatible Videos and Pictures
We think the HD label would probably get Fuji in trouble. The new camera is  compatible with your HDTV widescreen format, but Fuji never claims that it will produce super sharp HD pictures. But here’s a problem. When people see the HD label on the XP30 brochure, they’d expect the camera to give HD quality videos. We don’t think it will. The XP10 video quality is nothing to shout about, and we expect the same here.
  3. Photo book Assist
This software helps you create a mini photo book inside the camera. This way, there should be no more unorganized pictures inside your memory card.

In conclusion, we welcome the GPS function, wide angle lens as well as the mechanical stabilizer in the XP30, as they’ll certainly make the camera easier to use than the XP10. But we are concerned that the 2 million more pixels that Fuji added would only make the picture quality worse than the old model.

Do you agree?
